Come join me in journalism. I’ve been here for 30 years, and each day is still a new experience. Or several new experiences. I could be talking to the powerful in the morning, and, hours later, be doing a story which lights up a small patch of darkness. I could be investigating a complex scam one week, and joining a bunch of excited kids on a nature walk the next.

I come home, knowing that, in ways small and dramatic, I have made a difference, maybe not to the world, but to people. I give

a voice to triumph as much as to tragedy, to big struggles and small acts of heroism. What I do helps, whether I make people smile or move them to tears, and hopefully action.

Each night I go to bed asking myself if I have really done a day’s work or just done what I love doing, and got paid for it. Enviable, no? Climb aboard.
